Oil Filters
The primary purpose of an oil filter is to eliminate the contaminates in the oil before passing through your engine. This process starts with the oil pump where oil is pushed through to the filter holes at the base of the perimeter plate of the filter. The oil is cleaned of harmful debris like dirt and tiny metal fragments and pushed back through the filter to lubricate the engine.
Some recommend changing your oil filter every second oil change. All car models vary but you should pay close attention to your last filter replacement because they do not last in the long run. Typically, an oil filter runs healthy for 3,000 to 5,000 miles until requiring a change but there are extended-life oil filters that can last up to 10,000 miles.
Over time, oil filters can clog, which leads to impurities filtering through the engine which can build up and cause serious engine issues. A few symptoms to look out in a bad oil filter is a sputtering engine, loss of oil pressure, and dirty exhaust emissions, that may include a foul smell.
With the amount of different oil filters on today's market, finding the correct fit for your make and model can seem daunting. If you get the wrong one, it could damage your car or create a mess by springing a leak if it is a misfit and does not secure properly.
